A remarkable initiative has commenced in Liverpool that signifies an optimistic shift towards sustainable energy solutions for the city. The Mersey Heat Network Energy Centre is in its preliminary phase of construction at Peel Water’s Liverpool Waters at Princes Dock.

Key Details:

  • Leading the Initiative: The project is being championed by Peel NRE in partnership with Ener-Vate. The objective is clear: to serve as a pivotal element in Liverpool's transition towards low carbon energy infrastructure.

  • Purpose and Scope: The inaugural phase of the Energy Centre is set to cater to numerous households and business entities by providing them with low carbon heat and hot water. This not only lowers the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels but also aims to reduce a whopping 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

  • Innovative Technology: In terms of its technological components, the Energy Centre will boast one of the UK's most substantial water source heat pumps. This pump will harness heat from the Leeds/Liverpool Canal, which will then be used to provide warmth to buildings through an expansive six-kilometre district heating network.

  • Impact and Coverage: The district heating network is slated to cater to approximately 6,700 homes and an expansive commercial area of 1.3 million square feet within the Liverpool Waters development. Moreover, it is projected to extend its services to various domestic and commercial edifices throughout Liverpool.

  • Potential Energy Output: The initial output from this initiative is estimated to be around 20GWh of heat annually. However, there are ambitions to elevate this figure, with potential expansions planned to reach roughly 45GWh. To put this into perspective, this is tantamount to heating a staggering 17,000 new homes.

  • Partnership and Timelines: Vital Energi has secured a collaboration with Peel NRE to oversee the design and construction phases of the Energy Centre. The construction is expected to achieve its culmination by September 2024.

As Liverpool embarks on this promising journey towards sustainable energy consumption, The Smart Energy Company is committed to keeping you updated on the latest trends and developments in the energy sector. Transitioning to green energy is not just beneficial for the environment but is a step towards a sustainable future for all. Stay tuned for more insights and updates!
